Angola to Present National Biodiversity Strategy at COP 16

Angola is preparing its 2025/2030 biodiversity strategy for presentation at the sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 16), to be held from October 21 to November 1, 2024, in Cali, Colombia.

The Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho Pereira, spoke at one of the Workshops for the Contribution to the Revision of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP 2019-2025) held in July in Luanda. She discussed the development of the 2025/2030 National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, highlighting its significance as Angola strives to achieve the vision of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (CBD). The goal is to protect 30% of the territory and restore degraded ecosystems.

With this vision, Angola aims to create a world living in harmony with nature by 2050, where biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored, and used wisely. This will ensure healthy ecosystems, providing essential benefits for all humanity.

"Peace with Nature" is the chosen slogan, intended to encourage reflection on improving our relationship with the environment and rethinking an economic model that does not prioritize extraction, over-exploitation, and pollution of nature.

COP, or the Conference of the Parties, is the most important discussion and negotiation forum of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). It is where countries discuss issues related to the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources, in order to find solutions to the critical problems facing the planet.
