What do you like to do in nature?
Somewhere in the woods and on the island next to happy people

Church camping
I love joining church women, escaping somewhere in nature away from all the noise and modern diversions.
Many women in Africa spend most of their time in their daily lives, plagued by poverty, hunger, violent husbands, insurgent children, etc. For many, the church has been one of the safest places in the world, where the faithful find peace and hope. One of the many good activities that the church offers is the Christian camp- Believers gather in the forest from 1 week to a month, where there is no technology, electricity and noise. In this natural place people sing, eat vegetables, run, laugh, smile, meet wonderful people, march and read a lot. In short, it is a place that offers peace, psychological treatment, there is no stress or pressure.

🥰

🥳
Camping is an outdoor activity that involves spending time in nature, exploring its different aspects, and doing a wide variety of activities. Individuals spend time in various natural settings and enjoy themselves by taking part in physical activities.

Consider spending more time and resources on the experiences that add value to your life.

Sustainable lifestyles campaigns with Sofonie Dala

I think I'm a happy person to be in a place that I built with my own hands and doing works created by me!
🥳
I am an inspiring, influential person raising global awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals and the need for accelerated action. I use my unique global platforms to raise ambition around the SDGs and reach the most vulnerable first.

🥰

Empowering women is a central part of my work - and has been shown to have wider benefits as well. I think women playing a pivotal role in a more sustainable future for Africa's rural communities.

Where do you love to spend time?
Somewhere in the ocean

Somewhere in the woods and on the island next to happy people

Engagement that happens outdoors and in nature has the highest effect: walking, hiking and in particular gardening, nature watching, and sporting activities increase our level of happiness.

Besides the forests I also love to spend a lot of time at sea, observing the ocean and its resources, talking to the fishermen, collecting plastic that kill fish.
🥰
During the conference week I organized  mini-campaign together with fishermen in order to trace a new path that would guarantee the protection and conservation of the ocean and its resources.

What did you do on this sustainable holiday?

Holidays during the pandemic

I think I've only started having sustainable holidays since the emergence of the covid-19 pandemic.
🥰
I launched Africa Educates Her Campaign Angola, where the main objective is to ensure that all girls return to school during and after the pandemic. The only thing I bought is school supplies and biosafety supplies to distribute them free of charge to the most vulnerable girls.

🥳

Even with the help of IBM RPA technology, I managed to develop an educational chatbot to help young people find resources that reduce their carbon footprint on the planet.

🥰
Our everyday motto is "If a poor girl cannot come to the education, then education must go to her.''

What we eat, and how that food is produced, affects our health but also the environment.

We started eating a more plant-rich, balanced diet – one that provides energy and nutrients from several different food groups – and reduced foods that are harder on our planet.
Food needs to be grown and processed, transported, distributed, prepared, consumed, and sometimes disposed of. Each of these steps creates greenhouse gases that trap the sun’s heat and contribute to climate change. More than a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is linked to food.

Plan a sustainable event

Do you ever wonder about the sustainability impacts of your events, meetings or celebrations? In this exercise, we challenge you to make an occasion you are involved with more sustainable. This can be applied to the simplest of encounters (a dinner party, a picnic with friends) to the most elaborate event (a concert, a conference or a symposium).
*It is not necessary that you are the meeting/event organizer. You can also do this exercise for a meeting that you join or give suggestions to meeting organizers of events you attend.

Make lower impact choices

Depending on the type of gathering, you will need some infrastructure and energy use. Make choices that are less impactful:
  • Can you go wireless?
  • Could arrangements be made to have smarter choices on heating/cooling?
Your occasion could be an old-school conversation, no computers, or recordings, just sharing with your guests without tech interference. This could be a unique chance to connect directly with each other and be present in the moment. Maybe take notes with pen and paper! Obviously, not all events lend themselves to this, so try to limit technological demands by preparing presentations with no slides, curate smaller audiences so sound amplification isn’t required. Consider renting equipment instead of buying. Try keeping sweaters on if it’s cold or closing blinds when it’s hot rather than using energy-expanding heating/ cooling solutions.

Great! You have held a memorable event planned with sustainability in mind.

Surely you will impress your guests! However, our sustainable journey isn’t over. You still have to deal with the WASTE:
  • Are there proper disposal sites for trash and leftover food?
  • Did you favour elements which are recyclable?
Think beforehand about the disposable / waste elements from the event. First, try to eliminate the need for anything disposable (you can probably wash your dishes used in a family dinner party instead of using paper plates - or even worse, plastic ones!). If you must use these elements, make sure they’re biodegradable and are disposed of according to your local waste regulations. Consider the amount of food that will be served to avoid waste and plan to donate leftovers or make sure they are disposed of to become compost.
